Simulated Dynamics of Mixed Versus Uniform Grain Size Sediment Pulses in a Gravel‐Bedded River

چکیده

Mountain rivers often receive sediment in the form of episodic, discrete pulses from a variety natural and anthropogenic processes. Once emplaced river, movement this depends on flow, grain size distribution, channel network geometry. Here, we simulate downstream bed elevation changes that result inputs (∼10,000 m3), differing volume under medium high flow conditions. We specifically focus comparing responses between mixed uniform pulses. This work builds Lagrangian, bed-material transport model applies it to 27 km reach mainstem Nisqually River, Washington, USA. compare observed change accumulation rates lake simulation results. Then investigate magnitude, timing, persistence due introduction synthetic by results against baseline condition (without pulse). Our findings suggest response is primarily influenced sediment-pulse distribution. Intermediate mixed-size (∼50% median gravel size) are likely have largest impact because finer sizes translate quickly coarser (median larger) disperse slowly. Furthermore, pulse, with smaller than bed, increases mobility more uniform-size pulse. has important implications for river management, as allows us better understand fluvial geomorphic variations supply.

Downstream patterns of bed material grain size in a large, lowland alluvial river subject to low sediment supply

[1] A new data set of bimodal subaqueous channel bed sediments was analyzed for longitudinal patterns in grain size. It yielded two interesting observations: (1) separate fining trends in d50 exist for gravel and fines that overlap for 175 river kilometers, and (2) this overlap in fining trends results in a protracted (nonabrupt) gravel to sand transition. These suggest bed patchiness that is i...

Quantifying the dependency of uniform corrosion of structural steel on grain size

The dependency of uniform corrosion of structural steel on the average grain size (D) should be quantified for design purposes. In the present work, a spectrum of grain sizes was obtained by simple heat treatment routes in st37 structural steel. It was revealed that the corrosion current density (icorr) increased by grain refinement, which was related to the increased density of grain boundarie...

Complex behaviour of suspended sediment grain size downstream from a reservoir: an example from the Hanjiang River, China

Abstract A study on the suspended sediment transportation downstream from the Danjiangkou Reservoir in China has shown that the dynamics of suspended sediment grain size are complicated. During the period when the reservoir was used for flood retention, the suspended sediment median size decreased gradually; after entering the period when the reservoir was used for water storage, the median siz...

Fine Sediment Infiltration Dynamics in a Gravel-bed River following a Sediment Pulse

Pulses of fine sediment in gravel-bedded rivers can cause extensive fine sediment infiltration (FSI) into void spaces in coarse bed material, potentially altering river morphodynamics and aquatic ecosystems. Previous work suggests a conceptual model of FSI whereby FSI occurs to a limited depth as a function of the relative grain size of bed sediment compared with infiltrating sediment and is in...
